How Does Your Ethnicity Impact Your Rhinoplasty Procedure?

Posted October 26, 2022 in Rhinoplasty

4 Minute Read:

Like any cosmetic procedure, it is necessary to understand that not every rhinoplasty procedure is the same for each individual patient. That is because each person has his or her own unique nose and facial aesthetic.

Because of this, each procedure must be specifically designed to correct your cosmetic concerns.

This is especially true when you take a patient’s ethnicity into account. Many of our aesthetic features (especially on the face) are unique because of our ethnicity. So, when you undergo a plastic surgery procedure, it is necessary for your cosmetic surgeon to maintain your ethnic appearance.

Many people feel self-conscious about the size and/or shape of their noses, which leads to rhinoplasty being one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available to men and women of all ages.

In fact, in 2020, rhinoplasty was the most performed surgical cosmetic procedure.

So, if you’re frustrated with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty can help you achieve the balanced look you desire. However, it is important that you have your rhinoplasty performed by a plastic surgeon who is skilled in correcting your nose while also maintaining your ethnic appearance and features.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty (corrective nose surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure in which cosmetic issues with the nose are corrected. Some of the most common issues corrected by rhinoplasty include:

  • Nose size (whether it be too large or too small for the rest of the face)
  • Narrow or wide nostrils
  • Narrow or wide nasal bridge
  • Hooked, drooping, or upturned nasal tip
  • Humps or bumps on the nose

This procedure can be performed with one of two methods: open or closed.

With open rhinoplasty, Dr. Aly will make an incision in the skin between the nostrils (the columella) to make the necessary corrections. This method allows Dr. Aly better visibility and control during the surgery.

Conversely, with closed rhinoplasty, the incision is made within the nostril. While there is no visible scarring with this method, it does hinder Dr. Aly’s visibility during the procedure. Once the incision is made, Dr. Aly will either straighten the nose, if needed; remove cartilage and/or bone; or augment the size of the nose by adding cartilage, often with the use of cartilage grafts.

However, the specific type of correction that Dr. Aly uses is dependent, in large part, on your ethnicity.

How Is Ethinic Rhinoplasty Performed?

Ethnic rhinoplasty procedures are any cosmetic nose surgeries that are performed on men and women of differing ethnicities.

Each ethnicity has its own and unique facial and nasal aesthetic. Some examples include Asian and African men and women, who tend to have smaller noses with flatter bridges than others, and Middle Eastern men and women, who usually have larger and heavier noses than those of Caucasians.

While there are many shared concerns among patients of varying ethnicities (flat bridge, flared nostrils, drooping nasal tip, upturned nasal tip, etc.), it is very important to remember that any change should still fit with that patient’s ethnic identity.

The goal with ethnic rhinoplasty is to correct common nasal concerns without making the nose look out of place when compared to the rest of the face.

Does Ethnic Rhinoplasty Differ From Caucasian Rhinoplasty?

While many of the specific corrective techniques are similar between ethnic and Caucasion rhinoplasty procedures, there may be some differences. This is because there are variations between nasal structures of different ethnicities.

For instance, Caucasian patients tend to have thinner skin and thicker cartilage in their nose. This is not seen with Asian or African American patients, who tend to have thicker skin and thinner cartilage. Because of this, a technique used to shape the nose on a Caucasian patient may not necessarily work on a patient with thinner or weaker cartilage. In those cases, additional grafts or steps may be needed.

Every detail must be tailored to the patient.

After your ethnic rhinoplasty, you can look forward to a more aesthetically pleasing nose that is balanced with the rest of your face so that you can look and feel your best.
