After undergoing an arm lift, many patients are eager to show off their slender and sculpted results. Yet, before you can enjoy your full results, you’ll need to go through the recovery process. This blog will discuss the general recovery stages after arm lift surgery, including the first few days, the first few weeks, and the first few months after your procedure.

The First Few Days After Surgery

The first few days after your arm lift surgery are crucial for healing. You will likely feel sore, with some swelling and bruising. This is completely normal, and these side effects will fade with time. Dr. Aly utilizes a system for pain control that has dramatically improved patient experience with minimal to no use of narcotics to relieve discomfort.

Unless combined with other procedures, your arms will not be wrapped in bandages, and you will not have drains. Dr. Aly uses internal sutures instead of drains when performing his specialized Aly-posterior scar brachioplasty, ensuring a more effective, lower-maintenance recovery experience for his patients.

For the first week, Dr. Aly encourages patients to take at least six 10-minute walks every day with no time spent in bed except for sleeping at night. If the patient can walk more, they are encouraged to do so. Gentle arm movements and exercises are encouraged the day after surgery.

To help with recovery, sleep semi-reclined on your back and keep your arms gently elevated as much as possible, using pillows for support. The patient is asked to keep their arms up above “heart level” for two weeks after surgery, except for eating and using the bathroom. Avoid lifting anything heavy or doing strenuous activities.

Within a week of your surgery, you will return to see Dr. Aly to check incision sites and check in on your overall healing progress.

The First Two Weeks After Your Brachioplasty

During the first two weeks of arm lift recovery, your swelling and bruising will start to improve. You may still feel some discomfort, but it will be easier to manage.

Greater arm movement is encouraged as tolerated, and the patient is encouraged to return to as many normal activities as possible that do not cause arm discomfort. Most patients find that it is better to avoid raising their arms above shoulder level, as this can risk reopening the posterior scars.

Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within 10 to 14 days. However, if your job requires physical labor, you may need more time to recover.

The First Month After Arm Lift Surgery

By the end of the first month, swelling will be significantly reduced. Your posterior incisions will continue to heal, and your arm contour will start to look more defined.

You should continue to avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise.

Patience is key during arm lift recovery. Your arms will begin to look more sculpted, but it will take more time to see the final result. Keep following Dr. Aly’s post-op instructions, and your stunning new results will be evident in no time.

Three to Six Months After Surgery

At this stage, most swelling should be gone, and your arm lift surgery results will be more evident and closer to the final contour. Your posterior scars will still be visible, but will start to fade with proper aftercare. Dr. Aly makes arm lift incisions toward the back of the arm, so scarring is not easily visible from the front.

By three to six months post-surgery:

  • You may gradually return to full physical activity, with Dr. Aly’s approval.
  • Your posterior scars will continue to mature and fade with proper care.
  • Wearing sunscreen and moisturizing your scars can help improve their appearance.
  • Your arms should look firmer and more toned.
  • Dr. Aly will schedule follow-up appointments with you once a month for three to four months after surgery, dependent on your recovery progress. He will also see you for at least one year after surgery.

Full healing can take up to a year, but you will see substantial improvement within the first few months.

Tips for a Smooth Arm Lift Recovery

To ensure the best possible results, follow all post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Aly. Here are some tips that can make your arm lift recovery more comfortable:

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, as they can slow down recovery.
  • Maintain a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals to aid in tissue repair. Prep meals or arrange for a meal delivery service before your surgery so you don’t have to worry about cooking during those early days of recovery.
  • Stay hydrated to help your body recover faster.

If you experience any unusual pain, excessive swelling, or signs of infection, contact Dr. Aly’s office immediately for guidance.
