Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, enhances the nose and the harmony of the entire face. Surgery produces the transformation, but it is only the first step in the rhinoplasty journey. This blog walks you through rhinoplasty recovery in detail so you know what to expect after your procedure.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Rhinoplasty?
The healing time of rhinoplasty is different for each patient, but most are back to light activities within one to two weeks. Swelling becomes less noticeable in your second and third month of recovery, although it could take as long as a year or longer for swelling to subside fully. Patients can usually resume more strenuous activities by the end of the sixth week. However, they should use caution when participating in activities that could potentially damage their new nose. Dr. Aly will advise you on when you can, based on your particular situation.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline
Rhinoplasty recovery takes some time, but milestones along the way will remind you that you are making progress. Dr. Aly and his team will monitor you throughout your recovery to ensure you are healing well and address any potential concerns. You will need plenty of patience as you wait to see the final results of your nose job.
Week 1
The first week after rhinoplasty is marked by bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes. An external cast will be on the nose, and the inside of the nose will have internal splints. These splints are generally not visible to you. They are placed to help the septum, the middle wall of the nose, heal. Patients will feel congested due to internal swelling. You will be instructed to keep your head elevated, even when sleeping, to help manage the swelling. Cold compresses can also help relieve swelling and discomfort.
This week is about taking it easy, eating a healthy diet, walking around as much as possible, and avoiding anything that might make your nose swell. As you support your body’s natural healing processes, you will notice improvements by the end of the week. You will have a follow-up visit within 5–7 days after surgery to remove the cast and the internal splints. Tape will be applied to the outside of the nose for another week to help continue to reduce and prevent swelling.
Week 2
Bruising fades considerably by the end of the second week, making it easier to camouflage any residual discoloration under makeup. Swelling will also decrease, and you will begin to breathe easier and feel more like yourself again. Most patients resume light activities and return to work or school during this week.
Continue taking your medications as prescribed and sleeping with your head elevated. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for now. Protect your nose from any potential impact to allow it time to heal into its new shape.
Weeks 3–4
As your swelling continues to subside, you will begin to see the new shape and definition of your nose. However, the full results are unlikely to become evident for many months. You will likely be able to return to nearly all of your activities by the end of the fourth week, but avoid intense workouts or any activity that could make your nose swell or damage it while it’s still healing.
Weeks 5–6
By the end of week six, up to 70 percent of your swelling may be gone, and you should be breathing much easier. Your new nose shape is becoming more apparent, particularly along the nasal bridge. The tip usually has the longest-lasting swelling, making the tip feel round and firm. Patients should now be back to their daily routines and exercise programs, but wait for clearance from Dr. Aly before heading back to the gym.
Realizing Your Rhinoplasty Results
The final swelling in the nasal tip should dissipate within 12 months. You will notice the tip become softer, and the final shape is visible. Incisions are rarely a concern. Even with open rhinoplasty, the small incision at the base of the nose gradually fades until it is barely noticeable. The results of your rhinoplasty are permanent, but in some patients they can subtly continue to improve for a few years.
